Premieres on September 19 at 8 p.m. on CBC. 0:30

Battle of the Blades combines athletes from two of Canada's favourite sports — figure skating and hockey — as they pair up in a live, high-stakes figure skating competition for the charity of their choice.

Battle of the Blades launches with seven teams of skaters, pairing NHL veteran and Olympic hockey players to perform with their World and Olympic figure skating partners in a live figure skating competition. Here's how it breaks down.

Episode 1: In the two-hour season premiere on Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT), the seven competing pairs are introduced. Unfortunately, Colby Armstrong — who had been paired with Violetta Afanasieva — was injured during training, and P.J. Stock agreed to step in. This new pair will not compete the first week as they complete their training. The other six pairs, however, will perform and are eligible for voting/elimination the following week.

VOTING BEGINS: At the end of each episode, viewers are encouraged to vote for their favourite pair, with voting closing at 12 p.m. ET the following Tuesday. You can vote one time per 24-hour period.

In Episodes 2 - 5 (airing Thursdays at 8 p.m., 9 AT, 9:30 NT), we begin the show by revealing which two pairs had the lowest scores based on audience voting and the judges' scores. These two pairs will need to dazzle the judges with their skate that week to stay in the game.

All skaters then perform new routines, with the judges sharing their feedback and scores throughout the show. At the end of these episodes, the final scores will be revealed, resulting in the lowest-ranked of the previously-announced bottom two pairs going home.

In Episode 6 (Oct. 24), the final three pairs skate twice, and there is no elimination.

In Episode 7 — the season finale —  on October 31, all of the pairs return and the winners are announced. The winning pair receives $50,000 each for their charities.

Watch Battle of the Blades on CBC television and the free CBC Gem streaming service, and will continue to air Thursdays at 8 p.m. (9 AT/9:30 NT).  We will also be posting individual performances from each episode right here on cbc.ca/battleoftheblades.
