When Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz was in the red chair he talked about what it was like to own the Seattle SuperSonics pro basketball team.
Schultz, who went to college on a football scholarship, said the culture of professional sports ownership just wasn't for him.
"Buying an NBA team was a dream that I never thought would be possible for someone like me," Schultz told George. "But it also turned out to be a nightmare. It was not the right thing for me at that time of my life and I just thought the culture of professional sports and athletes who were making that much money, it was just inconsistent with my ability to kind of alter the mentality and I just got out. I tried to sell it to a local person in Seattle. Nobody wanted to buy it. We ended up selling it to someone from Oklahoma and he ended up moving the team. They've got a great team now."
When George asked Schultz if he'd consider getting back into sports ownership he had a simple answer.
"No," he said. "Professional sports is not for me."
Schultz also commented on the attitude of athletes.
"I think when you're 18, 19, 20 years old and you're making millions of dollars and you don't have the right support staff around you and you've got people who are trying to take advantage one way or another it's very hard to come to grasp with that and most people are not mature enough to handle it. And at the same time they're trying to win games and sometimes the motivation just wasn't there to win. It was just inconsistent with my value system."
Howard Schultz's interview on George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight airs Friday, November 1 at 7 pm and 11:30 pm on CBC.
