Perhaps you've heard - the world's longest domestic cat has died at the age of eight.

That's him in the photo at the top - Stewie, all 48.5 inches (1.23m) of him as measured from the tip of the nose to the end of the tail, by the Guinness Book of Records.

Stewie was a certified therapy animal that visited a local senior centre near his home in Reno, Nevada.

His owner, Robin Hendrickson said "Stewie was always very social and loved meeting new people. He has touched many lives, and for that I am grateful."

Well, Stewie's passing got us wondering about other big, long, tall and short animals who hold world records. So, we dug around and here's what we found.

First up, the world's tallest dog. This is 'Zeus', a Great Dane who lives in Michigan. He's 44 inches tall (1.118m) and stretches out to 7 feet 4 inches.

Can a dog play centre for the Raptors? Not only is 'Zeus' is the tallest living dog, he's the tallest living dog ever.

Kevin Scott Ramos - Guinness World Records

Then, there's Big Jake - a nine year old Belgian Gelding in Wisconsin and the tallest horse in the world.

He measured 20 hands 2.75 in (210.19 cm, 82.75 in. If you don't get horse measurements, that's 6 feet, 10 inches.

Oh, and that's without shoes. We won't even get into how tall he is in pumps.

Of course, height isn't everything. Just ask Archie, a 16-month-old Dexter bull from Northern Ireland and the shortest one in the world.

From hoof to the ridge between his shoulder blades, Archie is just 30 inches or 2.5 feet tall.

Paul Michael Hughes - Guinness World Records

Next, there's Harbor, an 8-year-old Black and Tan Coonhound who lives in Colorado.

Harbor has the distinction of being the dog with the longest ears in the world - (31.1 cm) 12.25 inches for the left ear and 13.5 inches (34.3 cm) for the right ear.

He also weighs in at a respectable 89.2 pounds.

Ryan Schude - Guinness World Records

Of course, that's nothing compared to Medusa (and really what else would you call it).

These people are holding the world's longest snake in captivity, at more than 25 feet long, weighing in at 350 pounds.

Here's a guy who really makes an ass of himself. From Oklahoma, four year old Sam is the tallest donkey on the planet - measuring 15.3 hands.

That's 5 foot 1 - which makes Sam taller than Danny DeVito.
