We all know what the moon looks like, right? It's a big pockmarked circle of rock, full of craters and irregularities that can sometimes make it looks suspiciously like there's a face in there looking down at us. But it wasn't always that way...

A new video from NASA, based on data from their Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), gives us a better understanding of how the moon initially formed, and how it came to take on the appearance it has today. Released to celebrate the LRO's 1,000th day in orbit, the video presents a computer-generated overview of the last 4.5 billion years, from the moon's fiery formation to the present day, all in two minutes and 42 seconds.
