Cyberbullying. Vile comment threads. Endless time-wasting. Made-up stories that go viral faster than anyone can fact check them. There are plenty of reasons to feel gloomy about the power that the internet wields over our lives these days.

But it's not all bad.

There are also a lot of ways the web can be a force for good, shining a light on stories that would otherwise go unreported and connecting communities who might not otherwise get to find each other. In the gallery above, we've collected five things on the internet that helped restore our faith in humanity.
