A sad loss for the world of sports, and the world at large: Angelo Dundee died Wednesday, February 1st. Angelo was a boxing trainer who helped some of the greatest fighters of all time achieve their best results. He was 90 years old.
His most famous training relationship was with Muhammad Ali - Angelo was a brilliant motivator who was in Ali's corner almost his entire career. He also helped Sugar Ray Leonard to victory in his biggest bout, and trained a host of other great fighters.
But he will always be most closely linked with Ali. They had one of the most successful fighter-trainer relationships in boxing history, with Angelo helping Ali become the first to win the heavyweight title three times. Angelo was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 1994 after a career that lasted six decades.
Angelo's son Jimmy says his father died with his family surrounding him, but not before attending Ali's 70th birthday party in Louisville, Kentucky last month. "It was the way he wanted to go," Jimmy Dundee said. "He did everything he wanted to do".
Angelo was on the program a few years back. Check out his interview below:
