Poverty And The London Riots - An Interactive Map

The Guardian has posted a thought-provoking interactive map charting the levels of poverty in different areas of London in relation to the places where violence occurred during the recent riots.

You can check out the full map here:

As GOOD.IS points out, correlation does not equal causation, but the graphic does show a high level of correlation between economically depressed areas and riot activity. Tottenham, in North London, is where the initial riots broke out - the area is also, by some measures, one of the highest centres of unemployment in the capital.

Many commentators on the riots have pointed to poverty as one of the root causes, although far from the only one. This map offers a high-level perspective of what happened where, and allows readers to draw their own conclusions.
