La Cage aux fenêtres laissant entrer un soleil déjà mort (2013)

LOOK AT THIS is a weekly series featuring the work of Canadian artists, designers and creators of all sorts.

Name: Sandra Chevrier

Born: Montreal, 1983

Lives and works: Montreal

This series: Les Cages Super Héros, pieces from which have been displayed at galleries around the world (it opens at a gallery in Norway this month). "I use collage and loose or heavy textures of paint to make the woman seem to be emerging from the surreal world within the canvas," Chevrier told The series is meant to draw attention to the "false expectations of beauty and perfection" imposed on women. "Society is asking them to become superheroes," she says.

Why she became an artist: "I entered a gallery in Montreal at age of fourteen. I was attracted by a painting called "Detritus Of Devotion" made by the great Canadian artist Heidi Taillefer. I was so drawn to it: suddenly there was a rush of emotion inside of me, and I started to cry. It made me realize that I wanted to be able to make people feel such strong emotion while looking at one of my creations. I had the chance to meet Heidi a couple of times, and I told her I started to have an interest in art because of her paintings."

Her weekly inspiration: "I go to the flea market every week. I am a crazy collector — sometimes of weird things but mostly of beautiful and old things that have stories. Every person who works at the flea market knows my son and me. We are a part of the family!"
