If you've ever seen the northern lights you've probably thought, "Wow! I can't believe how beautiful it is when charged particles radiating from the sun are funneled along the earth's magnetic field to the north and south poles where they collide with oxygen and nitrogen atoms, elevating those atoms to an excited state where they emit a photon of light in order to return to a ground state. It's like magic."
Well, thanks to some powerful solar flares, you might be able to see the northern lights from most places in Canada. That's because three eruptions from the sun could reach earth over the next two days.
Scientists don't think these eruptions will be overly intense, but a major solar flare could actually disrupt our technology, including power grids, communications systems and satellites. So, how big a threat are they? Check this out.
