15 Percent of Americans Now On Food Stamps
August 8, 2011

The economic situation in the United States isn't looking too great at the moment, what with Standard and Poor's decision to downgrade the country's credit rating. Unfortunately, things are also looking bad for the poorest U.S. citizens. A new report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture says 15% of Americans now receive food stamps.

That's a record-breaking number, and a 12% jump from this time last year. Some states are harder hit than others: for instance, more than 1.4 million people in Alabama received food stamps in May, which is over one third of the state's population.

The record percentage of food stamp recipients is a sign that more and more Americans are struggling to make ends meet. And that's not just an economic problem. According to this article from Grist, poorer people tend to buy junk food, since it boasts a much higher caloric content per dollar, which leads to negative health consequences as well.
