As a leading cancer researcher and physician, Siddhartha Mukherjee deals with cancer every day. But when one of his cancer patients wanted to know what she was up against, Dr. Mukherjee couldn't really say.
So, he decided to write a book - a 600 page answer to her elusive question. It may have taken him ten years to write it, but scientists have been grappling with cancer for several thousand years.
Siddhartha's book is a fascinating chronicle of the history of our epic struggle to define and better understand this complex disease - from ancient Egyptian times to modern day battles to 'cure' cancer. His book, 'The Emperor of all Maladies: A Biography of Cancer', won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for general nonfiction.
