Guest Peter MacKay

Okay, let's get this out of the way: yes, he's been voted Canada's Sexiest MP six years running by this country's political paper of record - 'The Hill Times'. But Peter MacKay - our former Minister of Foreign Affairs and current Minister of Defense - recently tied the knot. He married Nazanin Afshin-Jam: a former Miss World Canada and current human rights activist. The wedding was in Mexico, presided over by a Reverend from Nova Scotia.

Peter has represented the people in the House of Commons since 1997. He's followed in the footsteps of his father Elmer - once a Tory cabinet minister himself. Peter was once part of a handful of young politicians who were regarded as the future of the Progressive Conservative Party. But the future became increasingly dark with the waning fortunes of the PCs in the late 1990s and the rise of the Reform Party in the west.

But Peter saw the writing on the wall. He became one of the architects of the new Conservative Party of Canada. He even rose to the rank of deputy leader under Stephen Harper.

But the minister's run into trouble recently: he's faced questions over his travel tab involving a much-talked-about helicopter ride... and a certain football game. And with our combat troops now out of Kandahar it's up to Peter to help define what role Canada will play in the future of Afghanistan.
