There were a lot of reasons to love 'M*A*S*H'. Hawkeye, Hot Lips and Frank Burns - and, of course, Klinger. Forever trying to get kicked out of the army - and the Korean War - by wearing a dress.
Thankfully, it didn't work, and Klinger - A.K.A. Jamie Farr - stayed with 'M*A*S*H' right till the finale - the most watched show in TV history until 2010's Super Bowl! So yeah, 'M*A*S*H' made Jamie a star, but there's a lot before and after 'Klinger.'
Jamie started at the Pasadena Playhouse in California, only his name back then was Jameel Farah. At nineteen, an MGM talent scout spotted him, and before long, he had his first movie role: a developmentally challenged teen in 'Blackboard Jungle.' After that, Jamie served in the army - for real, and then carved out a TV career on the Red Skelton and Danny Kaye shows.
In '72, along came 'M*A*S*H'. Word has it that Jamie wore his own dog tags as Klinger. And those famous dresses? Apparently, he got some of them from Betty Grable and Ginger Rogers.
When 'M*A*S*H' ended in '83, Jamie stuck around for 'AfterMASH' and popped up in 'The Cannonball Run', One and Two. Jamie's done a bunch on stage too - and he's now starring in 'Tuesdays with Morrie' right here in Canada.
