Culture shock comes in many degrees but imagine going from Soviet-era Russia to Reagan-era America is of the earth-shattering variety. This is what happened to American novelist Gary Shteyngart and he describes the move and everything that happened before and after in his new memoir, Little Failure. Shteyngart has been a mainstay of the New York literary scene since The Russian Debutante's Handbook won the Stephen Crane Award for First Fiction in 2002. Two more novels followed, including the hugely successful Super Sad True Love Story. Sharp, witty, yet always tender, his work frequently appears in The New Yorker.
