VIDEO OF THE DAY: Architectural Appreciation With Ice Cube

To truly appreciate the sights of any city, it's helpful to have a local show you around. It's even better when that guide has a background in design and architecture, and can thus help you appreciate some of the iconic buildings on your tour.

But when the city is Los Angeles and your guide is Ice Cube, you then enter into the realm of awesomeness.

Before Cube's career as a rapper and actor kicked off in 1988 with N.W.A.'s gangsta rap hits "Straight Outta Compton" and "F*** The Police," he studied architectural drafting at a trade school in Arizona.

Now he appears in a video in which he takes viewers on a tour of L.A.'s best architectural gems, before arriving at his own personal highlight: The Eames House in Pacific Palisades.

The house, designed by modernist design pioneers Charles and Ray Eames and built in 1949, is seen by many -- including Cube -- as a masterpiece of 20th-century California architecture. It was built in just two days and made use of discarded materials. It is notable for the designers' groundbreaking use of different combined elements.

As Cube notes approvingly in his video tour of the Eames grounds: "They was doing mash-ups before mash-ups even existed."

The video was made for the exhibition Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945-1980, organized by the Getty Institute. Other videos in the series include Jason Schwartzman with conceptual artist John Baldessari and Anthony Kiedis on artist Ed Ruscha.

Ice Cube was in the red chair when George was in Vancouver last spring, so you can check his bio here and the full episode here.

As for his insights on the Eames House, post-war design, and the L.A. freeway system, they're in the video below:
