Taking public transit is not usually considered to be an aesthetic experience, especially if one is riding a subway system. Dark, underground tunnels designed to herd crowds of people aboard commuter trains don't always seem to provide the best showcase for the arts.
But that hasn't stopped transit authorities in many areas from trying to make the daily commute a more pleasant experience. Quebec's L'actualité magazine recently assembled a slide show of the most beautiful subway stations in the world, from Stockholm to Pyongyang.
Here are some of the highlights from each city the magazine mentions, as well as two of our own selections thrown in for good measure, one each from Toronto and Montreal:
Stockholm, Solna

Moscow, Komsomolskaya

Munich, Candidplatz

New York, City Hall

Paris, Concorde

Prague

Pyongyang, Puhung

St. Petersburg, Avtovo

Tashkent, Uzbekistan

Washington, D.C.

And for Canadian content:
Toronto, Museum

Montreal, Namur
