A community within a community: Tyendinaga’s First Nations Technical Institute

"A community within a community." That's how head flight instructor Jo-Anne Tabobandung describes the First Nations Technical Institute on the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory (near Belleville, Ont.).

The school works in partnership with several Ontario colleges and universities to deliver culturally-rich post-secondary programs. One of those is an Indigenous post-secondary aviation program, the only one of its kind in Canada.

The program teaches First Nations, Métis and Inuit students from coast to coast to coast how to become commercial airline pilots. Some students come from very remote, fly-in-only communities.

"You can kind of see the spirit of the Peacemaker in the flight school here in Tyendinaga," Jonny Harris said in the video clip above. "The Peacemaker’s vision was to bring people together."

Watch the video as Jonny soars through the skies with Jo-Anne, gets a bird's-eye view of Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, and meets some of the program's students.
