6 Ways To Look Stylish On A Budget

You don't have to break the bank to keep up with the latest fashion trends. Fashion journalist Mana Mansour shares tips on how put together an expensive-looking outfit for $100 or less.

Look 1: Weekend Cozy

The inspiration for this look all started with this affordable cape that's inspired by Burberry. Using the colour-tones of the cape, you can create a rich, textured look that screams cozy comfort — perfect for a day of shopping, brunch with friends or a movie night. When buying affordable jeans, remember to go for the right wash. Dark washes offer little to no fade and look more expensive. And, just like when you are buying expensive jeans, remember that taking care of them properly will make them last and keep their expensive-looking feel. Tip: Wash inside out, in cold water and air dry.

Look 2: Office Ease

When purchasing affordable work attire, go for classic shapes (no crop jackets!) that are in neutral basic colours like black, navy or grey. Then get creative with what you layer, like this fun cotton leopard dress and the pops of colour with these thrift pumps and bag. This look can be worn for all seasons. You can wear it with bare legs or with tights or sheer nylons for colder temperatures. Swap the blazer for a jean jacket and the pumps for sandals / wedges and you have a really chic summer outfit. When shopping on a budget it's important to ask yourself: Can I carry these items across all seasons?

Look 3: Casual Dinner

This look is inspired by Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City. It's appropriate for any age category, and can be worn for a nice dinner, a date-night, and even more dressy day events like a wedding shower or luncheon. Midi skirts have been huge the last few seasons and they are still going strong. Trends like this are great to do affordably, because you don't feel bad spending so little when the trend fades. Also, statement necklaces can be used to elevate any top, dress, or shirt, especially one that's pretty simple and basic. Have fun finding accessories at thrift stores.Value Village has a great assortment of purses and belts, so if you're new to thrifting, this is a great way to get introduced to it.

Look 4: Weekend Comfort

This menswear-inspired look is a big trend for women right now. It's an homage to the Americana look of favourite retailers like J.Crew, but done in an affordable way. Again, go to your favourite stores and get inspiration, it's the easiest way to recreate their looks. When shopping affordable handbags, less is more! This bag looks great because the hardware is minimal and the lines are clean. Also, a structured bag always looks more polished and more expensive than a slouchy bag.

Look 5: Office Elegance

This coat pays homage to the '60s mod trend, while still being affordable, warm and comfortable. Use different textures to give the illusion of a far more expensive look. Texture is key when masking affordable pieces for high-end. Silk-like fabrics or chiffon look expensive, but avoid anything too sheer. If they are sheer and you still love it, invest in a slip or a great nude body suit. This look works great for the office because it's not only chic and work appropriate, but it's also comfortable. This second-hand bag works in creating a chic monochromatic look, but it's big and roomy enough for a tablet and all the essentials.

Look 6: Evening Chic

The jumpsuit a great alternative to a little black dress as it’s sexy, comfortable and will make you look incredibly tall! This one is in a loose fabric, but its cinched-in waist is flattering. Keep the rest of the look pretty simple so that the jumpsuit could really take centre stage. Also, emphasize this deep-V criss-cross neckline it by placing a longer length necklace, which directs your eye to go up and down, versus side to side. This fun clutch found at Value Village is actually a wallet, so it's perfect for just the essentials when dancing. Take the strap off and you have a great wallet to place in your handbag.
