Gingham is by no means a novel print, but for spring/summer 2015, a handful of designers have gravitated toward the classic picnic-friendly textile, fashioning it in a way that feels fresh, new, and unexpected! Gingham is one of those prints that give your outfit an instant seasonal update. Whether it comes in the form of a button-down shirt, peeking out from your blazer for work or a pleated frock worn to a weekend BBQ, there's always a place for gingham!

How did you style the gingham trend here?

It all started with these fitted gingham trousers that are very versatile, they can be either dressed up or down. Here, Mana dressed them up with a look that would work great for a “9-5” look for a formal work setting. Mana is a big advocate of having a crisp white shirt in your wardrobe and it's also a great piece to pair with black and white gingham. As most Gingham prints are black and white, the print looks amazing with hits of colour. The coral pink jacket was chosen because it's feminine and perfect for spring.

Any tips on choosing your gingham pieces?

Whether you go for the traditional micro gingham print or the large ones that we see here, go for something with structure as the print is quite bold. Anything with too much movement or that's over-sized and slouchy will make your outfit look busy and not put together.

How did you style the gingham trend here?

Since gingham is such a traditional print, Mana went for a casual look here but with a bit of homage to preppy sportswear. Gingham looks great with denim, so the denim shirt is a great way to bring down the dressiness of the trousers. Soft pastels work great with anything in black and white, and this lightweight sweater adds another layer while still being fresh for spring. The floral scarf adds the perfect amount of interest without being too busy against the gingham.

Another trend Mana incorporated is the Birkenstocks trend. This was huge last summer and it's still going strong now but in more bright hues and pattern. They are comfortable, and work with any casual outfit. This is a great look to wear on the weekend or on a casual date night!

Spring Trench Coat

The latest breed of trenches to hit the market is the 'scandi' trench or duster coat. Regardless of what you call it, it is slouchy, lightweight, unstructured and rarely worn belted. It looks equally great with a pair of trainers as it does with heels. They're a fantastic mix between a robe, a proper coat and a kimono.

The 1970s boho trend is huge for 2015. We're seeing different interpretations of it, from music festival looks straight out of Woodstock to subtle elements in occasion wear. Here, Mana wanted to show something in between. This is an outfit that could easily be appropriate for work or on a night out on the town. Maxi dresses are a now mainstay in women’s wear and Mana loves how this dress hits various boho elements but still looks feminine and classy. The trench coat works with a dress like this because they are both flowy, and the colour of the trench coat breaks the bold pattern of the dress.

Some killer accessories are needed with a boho dress like this. Mana paired the dress with a long tassel necklace, which gives the illusion of length when paired with the long maxi dress. She finished it off with sky-high denim wedge sandals (another 1970's inspired piece) that’s both comfortable and looks great with everything!

Spring Trench Coat

Mana wanted to give this slouchy spring trench a bit of edge. This is a far more casual look, but it's for that cool girl that doesn't want a lot of fuss but still loves being on-trend.

There are two more spring trends that Mana shows off here that look great with this spring trench — first is the boyfriend jean. It looks so effortless and cool with the spring trench like this and the bonus is that it's comfortable. Many women think they can 't wear a jean style like this, but the thing to keep in mind is to find one that still has some structure and fit, and that doesn’t come too wide in the leg.

The next trend is espadrilles. These are a flat version done in python printed leather that just beg for a sunny day stroll. Espadrilles are a huge shoe trend for spring summer and are extremely comfortable, weather you buy them as flats or with a bit of a wedge heel.

When purchasing a trench coat like this, what should you look for?

This style can get away with anything! It looks great on a variety of shapes and sizes because it flows. However, if you're petit, Mana recommends a style that is shorter so you don’t end up swimming in fabric. Also, if you are curvier, definitely go for one that has some sort of belt so it can create a waist for you.

Florals are Mana’s favourite trend. It adds so much personality when you inject a bold floral pattern into your outfit. It’s also a trend that women of all ages can wear — it can be both feminine and edgy. There are so many different kinds of floral prints out there now, but find one that is rich in colour and where the size of the flowers are not too big.

Mana’s rule with florals prints: too big automatically tricks the eye in thinking there's more surface area, so pick a print no bigger than the size of your palm. Be aware that too small a print can look busy and messy.

When incorporating florals this season, try to choose one outstanding item and keep everything else pared back or neutral to stop it from looking too busy.

This is a toned down way of wearing the floral trend. Using the same floral shirt, Mana wanted to show a great look that you can wear on vacation or for a sunny day of shopping in the city. These pink trousers have a lot of movement, are breezy and a great alternative to jeans for the summer. A big handbag carries all of your essentials and with the pink trousers, creates a bit of colour-blocking, perfect paring with floral print.

Can these pieces be worn in different ways?

Yes, in fact this entire outfit can turn into a dressy one with just a quick switch! Swap the loafers for heels and automatically you have a dressed up outfit.

Remember when purchasing trendy pieces, think of at least three different items in your wardrobe that you can wear them with.
