5 Of Our Fave Martin Short Characters

Martin Short with Steven and Chris

Here at Steven and Chris, we're starting the New Year off right with a visit from one of our favourite funnymen, Martin Short, the pride of Hamilton, Ontario. On Monday, January 5, Martin will join us to talk about his storied career on the big and little screen and stage, as well as his new memoir, I Must Say: My Life as Humble Comedy Legend. He'll also talk about his "Nine Categories," a system he's been using for the last 35 years to keep his life on track.

To get you pumped, we thought we'd revisit some of the many hilarious characters that the comedic chameleon has taken on over the years.

Ned Nederlander from ¡Three Amigos!

In ¡Three Amigos!, Martin joined Steve Martin and Chevy Chase as one of a trio of underemployed movie cowboys who find themselves mixed up in a real-life turf war with El Guapo, a ruthless bandit in a Mexican village. Martin played the sweet-faced Ned Nederlander, who you might recall was a better dancer than he was a fighter.

Ed Grimley

Remember Ed Grimley? He was the cowlick-sporting, Pat Sajak-obsessed manchild with the pants up to his chest who started off at Toronto's Second City and went to appear on SCTV, Saturday Night Live and more, helping to launch Martin's career along the way.

Jiminy Glick

Jiminy Glick is Martin's cringetastic, so-clueless-he's-great celebrity interviewer. Jiminy recently made an appearance interviewing Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, which he kicked off by saying, "This is so exciting for me to be talking to you! Because usually, I talk to celebrities, so this is a nice change of pace. It really is."

Katharine Hepburn

Martin's Katharine Hepburn is one of the all-time great SNL impressions. In the sketch "Kate & Ali," his Kate stars as one half of a sitcom odd couple with Billy Crystal who plays — you guessed it — Muhammad Ali.

Franck Eggelhoffer from Father of the Bride and Father of the Bride II

Martin Short as Franck Eggelhoffer

Franck Eggelhoffer was the eccentric wedding design from the Father of the Bride movies who's remebered for constantly driving up the cost of the wedding… and for his killer workout routine.

Tune into CBC at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 5 to catch Martin Short on the show!
