5 DIY Hostess Gifts for the Holidays

It wouldn't be the holidays without a ton of holiday parties to attend. And while there's nothing wrong with giving a bottle of wine as a hostess gift, it's always more special if you bring something a little more personal… like one of these adorable DIY presents.

For The Foodie: Cranberry-Infused Vodka

What you need:

  • 1 bottle of vodka
  • 3 cups fresh cranberries
  • swing-top glass bottle
  • decorative bow

Instructions:

  1. Use a skewer to poke holes in the fresh cranberries.
  2. Fill up the bottle with cranberries.
  3. Use a funnel to add a tablespoon of sugar, and then fill rest of bottle with vodka.
  4. Let sit overnight in the fridge.
  5. Add decorative bow and you’re all set!

For the Bookworm: Old Book Pencils

What you need:

  • old books or newspapers
  • Mod Podge
  • pencils

Instructions:

  1. Cut old book or newspaper into strips wide enough to fit around the circumference of the pencil.
  2. Apply a thin later of Mod Podge to the back of the paper, and wrap around the pencil.
  3. Apply another layer of Mod Podge over the paper so it’ll stay fast when sharpened.
  4. Let dry, sharpen and place in a decorative jar.

For the Fashionista: Leather Tassle Keychain

What you need:

  • 6x3-inch-wide scrap of leather
  • key ring
  • superglue

Instructions:

  1. Snip off a thin strip of leather and set aside.
  2. Fold the leather scrap in half along the long side.
  3. Cut little fringes from the unfolded side, almost all the way up to the fold.
  4. Unfold leather and lay flat on table.
  5. Tightly roll leather up and pass through a key ring, folding half of the roll around the ring.
  6. Wrap the leather strip around the top of the tassel, using a few dabs of superglue to secure it.

For the Homebody: Pine Cone Fire Starters

What you need:

  • 6 pine cones, depending on size
  • 6-cup muffin tray with cupcake cups
  • pack of tea lights

Instructions:

  1. Brush off pine cones to get rid of excess debris.
  2. Line muffin tray with cupcake cups, and place a tea light in each, with metal cases removed.
  3. Place tray in oven set to moderate heat.
  4. Once the wax has melted, remove from oven and pull wicks to the side of cupcake cups with tweezers (to keep them from getting buried by the cones).
  5. Place a pine cone in each cup, and let cool until it sets.

For the Decorator: Watercolour Napkins

What you need:

  • all-white cloth napkins
  • acrylic paint in 2 colours
  • 2 spray bottles

Instructions:

  1. Squeeze a few drops of paint into the spray bottle, and fill three-quarters of the way up with water.
  2. Shake bottle to mix paint and water.
  3. Repeat with second colour.
  4. Working quickly, spray both colours onto the napkin, allowing them to blend and create gradients.
  5. Let dry and place in an oven at low heat to the paint sets.
