5 DIY Holiday Gifts for under $10

in

The holidays can be an expensive affair so we asked our Frugalista Amrita Singh to share five of her frugal ideas for beautiful, yet cost-effective holiday gifts — all under $10!

1. Trendy Duct Tape Fringe

DIY fringe made from various colours of duct tape.

Fringe is all the rage these days and you can make your own with a very unlikely material and that’s duct tape! This is a fun DIY gift idea that can be given to teens, tweens and even a group of adult girlfriends. Why not create a friendship fringe for your group? Turn it into a necklace, bag charm, or attach it to a frugal gift as a nice extra.

What you need:

  • printed duct tape
  • scissors
  • glue gun

Directions:

  1. Create a sheet of duct tape. Lay one strip sticky side up on your work surface. Lay another strip (sticky side up) on top of the first one, with a slight overlap. Continue until the strips make up your desired size.
  2. Rotate the strips so they go left to right.
  3. Lay down more strips, this time sticky side down, to finish your duct tape sheet.
  4. Trim off excess. Now you have a sheet of duct tape that can be used for tons of different crafts.
  5. Make the fringe by cutting slits along one edge. Leave 1/4 inch space at the top of slits and cut off strip.
  6. Roll the fringe strip and secure at the top with a small strip of duct tape.
  7. If you want to include a loop for your fringe, take a scrap piece of duct tape sheet and form it into a loop. Stick the loop to the inside of your fringe section with some tape, and then roll it up.

3. Festive Cocktail Coasters

DIY coasters are wrapped in ribbon.

This DIY project is a ton of fun and can include the entire family, assembly line style! Find a set of pretty scrapbook papers and use them to make a set of coasters. This is a great gift for party hosts and cocktail lovers.

What you need:

  • vinyl flooring samples
  • decorative paper
  • Mod Podge glue
  • ribbons

Directions:

  1. Buy small vinyl flooring samples from the hardware store. These are excellent because they won't damage tabletops.
  2. Cut sheets of decorative paper to the dimensions of the tiles.
  3. Apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to one side of the tile and apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the underside of the paper square.
  4. Attach the paper to the tile; shift it around so it fits perfectly. Repeat with all other tiles.
  5. Apply a coat of Mod Podge on top of the papered tiles and let dry.
  6. Spray an even coat of matte sealer on the tiles to make them waterproof coasters.  Wrap a set of coasters with a pretty ribbon and give them away to the hostess-with-the-mostest!

5. Candy Cane Hand Scrub

Homemade candy cane hand scrub.

The winter season is definitely one time of year where hands take a beating. Between washing dishes and the cold weather, hands can get dry and sore. This hand scrub not only smells good enough to eat but it's a soothing treatment that brings relief to chapped skin. This is a pretty gift for moms, teachers and colleagues.

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/4 cup crushed candy cane (red and white preferably)
  • 4-6 tablespoon olive oil (almond oil works too)
  • 10 drops peppermint essential oil (optional)

Directions:

  1. Combine all ingredients and transfer to a pretty jar.
  2. Decorate the jar with ribbon and hand it over to anyone who deserves some pampering.
  3. Massage the scrub into hands and then rinse off.
