The Fad: The Dr. Junger Clean Cleanse

The claim: Let's be honest, people do cleanses to lose weight. But the claim here is that you'll feel better, "reset your system" and have more energy. The idea is that cleansing will do all sorts of magical things to make you a better person.

The verdict: The bottom line is, it's all bunk. You don't have toxins floating around in your body; we have organs that take care of cleansing.You have to find a lifestyle you can enjoy and sustain, or the weight will come back.

The Fad: Going Gluten-Free

Endorsed by: Miley Cyrus, Steve Nash, Milla Jovovich

The claim: The claim here is that gluten is the cause of the obesity epidemic, and that you'll lose weight if you cut it out.

The verdict: There's no evidence that it's a weight loss strategy. Weight loss is all about how many calories you take in. Going gluten-free is not a healthy lifestyle choice unless you need to do it (like if you have Celiac disease). There's even ongoing controversy as to whether non-Celiac gluten sensitivity even exists!

The Fad: Bizarre Beauty Treatments

The claim: Better, younger looking skin

The verdict: You have to take this with a grain of salt, because there's no evidence to support this. I dug and dug, and again, found nothing. As part of my research, I received a celeb-worthy facial at a fancy SoHo spa, and it was bliss! I loved it; it was one of the most relaxing experiences of my life. But when I got home, I broke out into acne. There's no evidence to support facials are beneficial.

The Fad: Drinking 8-12 Cups of Water Each Day

The claim: Drinking more water will make you feel better and look more beautiful, plump up your skin.

The verdict: Again, there's no evidence to support this. Once you are adequately hydrated, you pee the rest of the water out, it doesn't go to your face. So just drink when you're thirsty!
