Four Essential Daily Supplements
With all the conflicting information that's out there, it's no wonder most of us are confused when it comes to which vitamin supplements we should be taking. Fortunately, nutritionist Peggy Kotsopoulos is here to deliver a much-needed dose of clarity with the four daily supplements we shouldn't do without.
1. Omega-3
Omega-3 fatty acids are incredibly important for both brain function and heart health. The body does not naturally produce omega-3, and most of us don't get enough from diet alone, so it's important to get it from an external source.
2. Vitamin D
Vitamin D is important for bone health and immune function and has been linked to cancer prevention. The body gets nearly 90% of its vitamin D through sun exposure, so those living at northern latitudes generally suffer from a greater deficiency than those in sunnier southern climates.
3. Chlorella
Chlorella is the most concentrated source of chlorophyll on the planet. A daily supplement is especially important if you are not getting enough greens in your diet. It's a powerful antioxidant, boosts immune function and has cancer-prevention properties—not to mention, it's also loaded with vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients.
4. Probiotics
Probiotics help keep your intestinal tract on track. Not only do you absorb nutrients through your intestines, but roughly 80% of your immune system also resides in your gut. If you don't have a healthy intestinal system, you won't absorb any nutrients—no matter what supplements you take. But remember, it's important to rotate between brands as each carries a different strand of active bacteria culture; switch things up on occasion to confuse the bad bacteria in your system.
