Butting Out!

We all know that smoking is bad for us but 20% of North Americans still can't seem to kick the habit. Dr. Ali says it's time to lose the excuses and quit today!


EXCUSE 1 - Smoking relaxes me

Walking away from a stressful situation for a few minutes is bound to relax anyone. There's no reason you need to have a cigarette in your hand to do that.

Smokers often claim cigarettes 'relax' them but the physiology tells a different story. When you smoke, your heart rate and blood pressure spike. There's nothing relaxing about that.

EXCUSE 2 - I only smoke one or two cigarettes a day

If you smoke only two cigarettes a day for fifty years, you'll have smoked more than 35,000 cigarettes in your lifetime. Each of those cigarettes takes 8 minutes off your life. You do the math.

There is no 'safe' amount of smoking.  

EXCUSE 3 - I'll gain weight if I quit

It's true that smokers tend to gain between 5 and 10 pounds when they finally kick the habit but that's no excuse. As a non-smoker, you'll be able to enjoy more physical activity, which should offset your weight gain.

And chew on this: You would have to weigh more than 400 pounds to have the same cardiac risk as a smoker.

EXCUSE 4 - I've been smoking for years...The damage is already done


Quit today and your chance of dying of a hard attack drops sharply within a year. Your risk of stroke can be the same as a non-smoker's after just two years. Your risk of mouth, throat, esophageal and bladder cancer are cut in half within five years. Your risk of dying of lung cancer drops by half after ten years.

Quit! The sooner, the better - but better late than never.

EXCUSE 5 - I'm just not ready

You'll never feel ready to quit. Today is as good a day as any.
