Body Business 101

Think you know how long it takes for your body to "do its business"? Take this quiz and find out!

How long do you think it takes your body to:

1. Make pee
  • 10 minutes
  • 1 hour
  • 3 hours
  • 24 hours

It takes about one hour for that glass of water to be absorbed into the bloodstream by your digestive tract, filtered by your kidneys and then released into your bladder.

2. Conceive
  • 5 minutes
  • 30 minutes
  • 24 hours
  • 1 week

Sperm need to travel about 18 cm from the bottom of the uterus up to the fallopian tubes, where the egg usually gets fertilized. The fastest swimmers can cover that distance in as little as half an hour! Conception can actually occur as many as 5 to 7 days after sex.

3. Break down 1 alcoholic drink
  • 1 hour
  • 4 hours
  • 12 hours
  • 24 hours

After alcohol is absorbed from your stomach and small intestine, it takes a normal adult liver about 1 hour to break down 1 standard drink. Factors like your age and size determine how quickly and how high your blood alcohol concentration rises.

4. Digest food into poop
  • 1 hours
  • 4 hours
  • 24 hours
  • 1 week

Each bite travels about 30 feet from your mouth to your bottom end before it’s released as poop, and the entire process takes about a day, give or take a few hours. Keep in mind that foods with higher fat and protein content digest more slowly, while fibre-rich foods like fruits and vegetables zip through faster.

5. Grow a new fingernail
  • 6 days
  • 2 weeks
  • 3 months
  • 6 months

It takes about 6 months to completely replace one. Compared to a study done in the 1930s, nails today grow almost 20% faster—probably because modern diets are higher in protein and nutrients, which speed up nail growth.

6. Gain weight after eating
  • 1 hour
  • 3 hours
  • 24 hours
  • 1 week

A moment on your lips and just 3 hours later it could already be on your hips! A recent study from Oxford University showed that it takes just 3 hours for most of the fat from a heavy meal to show up in the fatty tissue around your waist.
