2013 Super Foods

Nutritionist Peggy Kotsopoulos gives us a lesson on the latest and greatest super foods. Rich in nutrients, these foods have high amounts of naturally-occurring phytochemicals, usually found in the colouring agent of whole foods like fruits and vegetables.

Eggshell Membrane

Egg Shell Membrane

You know that piece of skin that separates the egg from its shell? That's what we're talking about. But before you go wasting your time peeling it off hardboiled eggs, you should know its most effective (and efficient) form is as a supplement.

The eggshell membrane reduces inflammation and alleviates chronic pain within a week. And Peggy can vouch for its effectiveness -- when she started taking it, she noticed a huge difference in her knee. She loves this stuff!

While research surrounding eggshell membrane is relatively new, studies show that it helps reduce joint pain in people with osteoarthritis and joint and connective tissue disorders. It contains joint-healthy nutrients like collagen (which strengthens and builds connective tissue), hyaluronic acid (the fluid that lubricates joints), and a usable form of glucosamine (more effective than that found in shellfish).

Amaranth

Amaranth

While quinoa may seem like the superstar grain, amaranth is right up there! High-in-protein quinoa has 8g of protein per cup, while amaranth has nine. It's also gluten-free, high in fibre, rich in antioxidants and has healthy fats.

Mushrooms

Mushrooms

All mushrooms are rich in beta glucans, those polysaccharides that are among the strongest immune-boosting compounds around. They also have strong anti-tumor properties, activate the immune system, and regulate disease-fighting white blood cells. Mushrooms are rich in minerals, vitamins, polyphenols, and sterols that keep our immune system healthy and strong.

Mushrooms are beneficial in preventing cardiovascular disease, by helping to prevent white blood cells from building up and sticking to blood vessels in an inflamed environment, narrowing blood flow. Studies show mushrooms can also prevent the growth of tumors and help reduce the risk of breast cancer.

Lucuma

Lucuma

This low-glycemic sweetener contains many nutrients including beta-carotene, iron, zinc, vitamin B3, calcium and protein. Yellow lucuma powder has a unique, maple-like taste that's a delight in a variety of recipes.

Dragon Fruit

Dragon Fruit

It's be coined the superfood of 2013, and for good reason. Dragon fruit has super high antioxidant properties which counteract free-radical damage. Its little seeds contain omega 3 fatty acids, which help with weight loss and reduce inflammation and heart disease. Dragon fruit are also rich in fibre and very low in sugar.
