The Right Kinds of Fats

You shouldn't have to break out your calculator to make healthy choices. Start with a balanced diet that favours the right kind of fats and you're already ahead of the game!

What is the difference between good and bad fat?

Saturated and trans fats are the baddies. They both raise your “bad” cholesterol, and trans fats also lower your “good” cholesterol. You can find them in fatty meats, high-fat dairy and many processed foods.

Good fats can be found in oily fish, some nuts, avocados and certain plant oils such as olive, canola and sunflower oil and spreads (like Becel® margarine).

Replacing saturated fats with polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated (from vegetable oils) helps lower cholesterol levels —helping to keep your heart healthy. Healthy choices can really add up over the year!

Keep this in mind when you're doing your grocery shopping and snacking: Just two 10 gram servings of butter a day add up to over three and a half kilos of saturated fat in a year (that’s over eight pounds!).

It’s easy to substitute Becel® margarine for butter in any recipe! Making the switch from butter to Becel® can reduce your saturated fat intake by 80 per cent.
