The 411 on Tequila

Before you take a sip of your next cocktail, know the quality of tequila that's going into it. Cocktail Deeva Dee gives us the 411 on the tequila that's tops.

The 411 on Tequila

Three things we should all know about tequila

  1. Tequila is made from the blue agave plant.
  2. It's mostly made by hand. The blue agave plant is basically baked, before the juice is extracted and fermented.
  3. Authentic tequila is made in Tequila, Mexico just like Champagne is made in Champagne, France.

What's the difference between white and gold tequila?

Ageing processes vary from tequila to tequila. Some ageing happens in stainless steel drums so there is no colour. Others are aged in stainless steel and colored then flavored with caramel. Some get their colour from ageing in barrels

Why do they put a worm in the bottle?

In 1940, the worm was first placed in the bottle as a marketing gimmick. Worms should only be found in tequila's sister beverage mezcal. This is known as con gusano (with worm).

Low End Tequila

A low end tequila is not 100 percent agave. It's called "mixto" because it's blended with sugar and water during distillation. It also leads to worse hangovers!

High End Tequila

A good high end tequila is made from 100 % Agave and is aged longer which makes it taste smoother.

Aztecs believed it was a gift from the gods and required a human or blood sacrifice to drink it to help insure a plentiful crop.
