Traditional Meets Modern in a Masculine Den
The traditional den is making a comeback. Designer Trish Johnston shows us a masculine den that mixes modern decor with traditional touches. The result: a dramatic space that's suited for desk work, casual meetings and cocktails.

Black walls set the tone
Choose a dark wall colour like this deep brown-black "Black Jack" by Benjamin Moore. A dark wall sets the tone for this strong, dramatic and bold look. The artwork reinforces the tone of strength. The black-on-black is chic and allows the bar and floor lamps to pop against the wall.
Create a bar area
A bar area complete with crystal and glass barware adds a subtle sparkle to the room. A chrome and glass console is a great piece to use for a home bar. The chrome adds coolness to the warm space.
Choose classic cognac leather
The cognac leather chairs are very masculine and will only look better as they weather with age. Cognac leather is a classic look and will never go out of style. It's well worth the investment!
Add a few statement pieces
The antler magazine rack in white placed on the soft grey shag rug is a very interesting juxtaposition of textures. Antlers are repeated in the light fixture. The rustic fixture commands a presence in the room, making it a suitable choice for this very masculine den.
