How to Hang Curtains Properly

Curtains can be a tricky and costly, so it's worth taking the time to get them right. While there are no hard and fast rules, we've come up with some guidelines to help make your window treatments work for you—no matter your style.

Casual

  • Mount rod the height of the window casing above the moulding.
  • Rod diameter should be half the size of the window casing.

So...if you have a four-inch window casing, you should mount a two-inch rod four inches above the moulding for a more casual look.

Formal

  • Double the height of the window casing and mount the rod that much above the moulding.
  • As above, rod diameter should be half the size of the window casing.

So...if you have a six-inch window casing, you should mount a three-inch rod 12 inches above the moulding for a more formal look.
