Growing Boys’ Bedroom

Looking for kids' room decor that won't quickly be outgrown? Forget the obvious themes and opt for an adult design with a youthful spin.

Bed

Bedroom sets are convenient, but really don't give much dimension to a space. Here we opted for a single bed with a rustic iron-like finish. It has an old world look, but the shape has a contemporary, curved top. This is where you can have some fun. We purchased inexpensive bedding, and layered it. Keep the duvet and sheets relatively simple, and reserve the scenes and prints for pillows.

Wall

The idea here is to create a focal wall or customized wallpaper tailored specifically to this space. We love this vintage map piece, because it is a nod to an exploration theme without being over the top. This is the kind of paper that will remain timeless no matter how old your child is. A full wall of this paper would have been too much, so we opted to break it up with chair rail. You don't want to get fussy with applied molding or raised panels here, so keep it simple (and inexpensive) with just chair rail painted in the same color as the wall. These simple hooks take the place of any artwork. The paper is too busy for competing artwork, so keep anything on the wall practical or sculptural.

Chair

Having a chair in a bedroom is always useful. Choose a chair that's smaller in scale but can still be used by an adult. This burlap-inspired upholstery is very on trend, but don't choose a piece with bold lettering or graphics. A simple stripe will grow with the space and the family.

Night Table and Table Lamp

We chose a rustic night table and miniature sea light. You should really have the most fun with the least expensive items such as these. Choose pieces with real character and personality.

Bookshelf

Don't forget to choose double-duty furniture. If your set came with a bookshelf, keep it — just rethink its function. Here we used some great baskets that double as clothing and toy storage.
