DIY Tool Shelf

Get your garage organized with Frank's simple DIY tool shelf.

5 2-in. x 3-in. x 8-ft. pieces lumber
5/8-in. x 4-ft. x 8-ft. sheet plywood
2 1/2-in. wood screws
spirit level

  1. Cut plywood into three shelves, 18 x 48 in. each.
  2. Cut three of the 2- x 3-in. pieces of lumber in half, so you're left with six 4-ft. pieces. You'll use three as shelf supports on the wall, and three along the front edges of the shelves.
  3. Use wood screws to affix one of the 2-in. x 3-in. x 4-ft. pieces of lumber to the wall studs (across the studs) 20 in. off the ground (bottom shelf), another 36 in. off the ground (middle shelf) and another 52 in. off the ground (top shelf).
  4. Attach 2-in. x 3-in. x 4-ft. front support to leading edge of each shelf.
  5. Screw shelves to supports on stud wall, starting with lower shelf and working your way up.
  6. Attach remaining 2-in. x 3-in. x 8-ft. pieces of wood (front legs) to front supports of shelves using wood screws and a spirit level. Make sure each shelf is level, and the legs are plumb and true.
