Spend! You definitely want to spend on these items. It’s unhygienic to buy old ones and new items are very reasonable. Also, jerseys tend to be used during every practice session and more often than not, it'll have your kid’s name embossed on it.

However, top of the line equipment doesn't always mean it's the best. Ask around and make sure you get what you paid for.
Save! This is the most expensive used item you have to buy for your child's hockey bag. Kids grow out of them every year, so look for gently used sticks either online or at your local sports store. You could also check with your school’s hockey association for more information.
