Spend or Save: Hockey Gear

It's hockey season and putting together a hockey kit for the first time can be an expensive affair. Our favourite finance expert, Rubina Ahmed-Haq, crunched some numbers to help stretch your sporting goods budget. Follow these tips on where to spend and where to save.

Spend! Helmets will be one of the most expensive 'new-buys' when you are putting together a kit for the first time. But they are also one of the most important pieces of equipment. They protect your child and buying a used one might be dangerous. Always remember to make sure the helmet fits snugly on your child’s head.

Protective Gear

Save! Protective gear includes items like gloves, shin pads, shoulder pads, elbow pads and hockey pants. Save your money here by buying used gear as kids grow out of these very quickly. It's easy to find gently-used items online for a good deal. Invest in a disinfectant to spruce up old gear.

Jocks, Socks and Jerseys

Spend! You definitely want to spend on these items. It’s unhygienic to buy old ones and new items are very reasonable. Also, jerseys tend to be used during every practice session and more often than not, it'll have your kid’s name embossed on it.

Neck Guard

Spend! Along with helmets, neck guards are one of the most important pieces of gear for your child. It protects your child’s neck from injury caused by hockey sticks, pucks and skate blades. However, top of the line equipment doesn't always mean it's the best. Ask around and make sure you get what you paid for.

Hockey Sticks

Save! This is the most expensive used item you have to buy for your child's hockey bag. Kids grow out of them every year, so look for gently used sticks either online or at your local sports store. You could also check with your school’s hockey association for more information.

Hockey Skates

Save! Hockey skates are another piece of equipment you can save on. Whether it’s a good deal online or at your local sports store, make sure it's a good fit!

Special thanks to Play It Again Sports for all the fabulous hockey gear!
