Volleyball Canada inks DeRocco

Coach guided Australia to 8th place effort at Sydney Olympics

Stelio DeRocco will get another crack at an Olympic berth with Canada's national men's volleyball team.

Volleyball Canada on Thursday signed the Toronto-born DeRocco to a two-year contract extension.

The deal keeps DeRocco under contract until 2006, when it's expected he'll sign another extension to remain national coach through the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

"There is no denying Stelio's passion for the game of volleyball, his country, and for this team," said Volleyball Canada president Dave Carey. "We have the utmost confidence that he will continue to lead this team in the right direction."

DeRocco coached Australia to a record eighth-place finish at the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney before taking the head-coaching job with Canada.

A national team member from 1977-80 and 1985-86, DeRocco guided the national team to a record-tying second-place finish at the NORCECA zone championships in 2003, though Canada subsequently failed to qualify for next month's Athens Olympics.
