Vassiliev banned two years for doping

Russian ski jumper Dmitri Vassiliev has been banned for two years for doping.

Vassiliev, the first ski jumper to fail a drug test, was banned until Jan 4, 2003, and will miss next year's Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, the International Ski Federation said Tuesday.

He tested positive Jan. 4 at a World Cup event in Innsbruck, Austria, the third leg of the Four Hill Tour.

Vassiliev broke into the ranks of top ski jumpers this season by making the top three on three occasions.

The ski federation said Vassiliev tested positive for furosemide, a banned diuretic that can mask steroids and help weight loss.

Lighter ski jumpers usually can stay afloat longer and land greater distances.
