Van Koeverden extends kayak streak

Adam van Koeverden of Oakville, Ont., remained undefeated this season in the Olympic kayak singles events with a victory Saturday in a World Cup 500-metre race in Gerardmer, France.

Adam van Koeverden of Oakville, Ont., remained undefeated this season in the Olympic kayak singles events with a victory Saturday in the men's 500-metre race at a World Cup event in Gerardmer, France.

Van Koeverden, the 500 champion and 1,000 bronze medallist at the 2004 Athens Games, has won those races at all three stops on the World Cup circuit this season.

Van Koeverden took the gold in Saturday's K-1 500 eventwith a time ofone minute, 39.885 seconds. Sweden's Anders Gustafsson finished second in 1:40.200, and Tim Brabants of Britain was third in 1:40.510.

Mark Oldershaw of Burlington, Ont., collected his fifth medal of the season Saturday by placing third in the men's canoe singles 500-metre racein 1:50.953.

Multiple world and Olympic champion Andreas Dittmer led Germany to a 1-2 finish in 1:50.443, with Sebastian Brendel second in 1:50.648.

In Friday's 1,000-metre finals, van Koeverden won gold and Oldershaw took silver in their respective races.
