Toronto FC to host Real Madrid in exhibition game: reports
Major League Soccer club Toronto FC announced Friday it was moving up the date for its home game against the New York Red Bulls, possibly clearing the way for it to play an Aug. 7 exhibition match against Spanish giants Real Madrid.
The game against New York, originally scheduled for Aug. 9, will now be played on June 13.
Real Madrid will take on D.C. United, also of MLS on Aug. 9 in the second contest of its two-game pre-season tour of North America. The Washington Post and Globe and Mail reported Friday that Real Madrid will play Toronto FC two days earlier.
A statement from Toronto FC said that Aug. 9 game against New York was moved to June 13, "due to a potential conflict at BMO Field," making no mention of a potential exhibition against Real Madrid.
Officials with Toronto FC were unavailable for comment.
Real Madrid is one of the most successful pro clubs in history, having won the European Cup and Champions League a record nine times, and the Spanish league title on 31 occasions.
Past star players to have worn the famous Real Madrid white jersey include Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane and David Beckham.
