Former Olympic figure skating champion Evgeni Plushenko will undergo surgery on his left knee Feb. 23.

The 29-year-old Russian won a seventh European men's title last week in Sheffield, England, to add to his Olympic gold from 2006 and three world championships.

Plushenko said on Twitter on Friday he will have the knee operation in Germany.

He had already ruled himself out of the world championships in Nice, France, from Mar. 25-Apr. 1 so he can recover from the surgery.

Plushenko returned last year from a suspension imposed by the International Skating Union in June 2010 for taking part in exhibitions without the approval of the governing body.

Plushenko intends to compete at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, when he will be 31, as he bids for a medal at a fourth straight Games.
