Olympians not in action at Canada Cup

Canada's Olympic wrestling team opted to rest this weekend instead of taking the mat at the Canada Cup in Guelph, Ont.

Canada’s Olympic wrestling team opted to rest this weekend instead of taking the mat at the Canada Cup in Guelph, Ont.

Three Canadian wrestlers – Carol Huynh of Calgary and Athens silver medallist Tonya Verbeek and Saeed Azerbayjani, both of St. Catharines, Ont., were slated to compete, but all three decided against it.

"I think a lot of them felt like it was just too much," said Doug Cox, Canada Cup tournament executive. "They’ve got to be prepared for the Olympics, which is only five or six weeks away, so that’s their top thing. It’s for their best result in Beijing."

The men’s team has a tournament in Spain this week and some members of the women’s team are still in Guelph for a training camp, which wraps up Friday afternoon.

The Canada Cup tournament is mandatory in non-Olympic years and despite this being an Olympic year, the one-day freestyle competition drew 145 wrestlers from seven countries.
