Men's basketball Olympic qualification roster announced
Samuel Dalembert of the Philadelphia 76ers and Joel Anthony of the Miami Heat are on the Canadian men's basketball team headed for the the FIBA Olympic qualifying tournament next month in Greece.
"We're very excited about this team," said head coach Leo Rautins in a release announcing the 12-man roster on Sunday. "The guys have all been working extremely hard and we're just looking forward to getting things started."
The selections were made after a 10-day training camp in Toronto.
Guard Rowan Barrett, a 10-year veteran of the national squad, returns.
Also named to the team was Rautins's son Andy, who recently recovered from knee surgery and has been back on the court for a few weeks.
The Syracuse Orangemen guard tore his ACL at the FIBA Americas qualifying tournament last summer in Las Vegas after leading the Canadian squad in scoring at the Pan American Games.
Others include guards Jermaine Anderson of Toronto, Carl English of Patrick's Cove, N.L., Tyler Kepkay of Vancouver, plus forwards Olu Famutimi of Toronto, Levon Kendall of Vancouver, Juan Mendez of Montreal, David Thomas of Brampton, Ont., and Jesse Young of Peterborough, Ont.
In mid-July, the men's team will compete at a last chance Olympic qualifying tournament in Athens, Greece. Twelve countries will compete for three spots in Beijing.
Canadian basketball fans will have the chance to see the men's team in action from June 30 to July 5. As part of the Jack Donohue International Classic tournament, Canada will face Lebanon and New Zealand in a series of exhibition games in Toronto and Hamilton, Ont.
