Veteran Hayley Wickenheiser was named captain of Canada's national women's team for the IIHF World Championships in April, Hockey Canada announced Saturday.

The Shaunavon, Sask., native has been captain of the women's team since 2007.

Wickenheiser played the 2008-09 season with the second-division men's side in Ekilstuna in Sweden.

Jayna Hefford of Kingston, Ont., Becky Kellar of Hagersville, Ont., and Caroline Ouellette of Burlington, Ont., were named Canada's alternates.

"We believe each of our players has the ability to be leaders in their own way and we're looking to Hayley, Jayna, Becky and Caroline to bring that quality out in everyone," said head coach Melody Davidson in a release.

The tournament runs April 4-12 in Hameenlinna, Finland. The squad is already in the host country, tuning up for the tournament and defeated a Helsinki-based midget-AAA boys' team 3-1 on Saturday in an exhibition match.

The Canadians will be on a quest to avenge last year's world championship defeat at the hands of the U.S. The Americans beat Canada 4-3 for the gold medal.
