Whalers win deciding game over Rangers: CHL playoffs

James Livingston's tiebreaking goal with 3:04 remaining in the third period led the Plymouth's Whalers to a 4-2 win over the Kitchener Rangers in Game 7 of their Ontario Hockey League quarter-final series Monday night.

The Whalers held on to win the Western Conference best-of-seven after letting a 3-1 series lead slip away.

Michael Whaley, Robbie Czarnik and Tyler Brown, into an empty net, also scored for Plymouth, while Whalers goalie Scott Wedgewood was sharp with 37 saves on 39 shot.

Top prospect Gabriel Landeskog and Jerry D'Amigo both scored their sixth goal of the series for the Rangers.

The Whalers will take on the Owen Sound Attack in the Western Conference semifinals.

After the Whalers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second period on goals by Whaley and Czarnik, the Rangers stormed back in the third.

Kellan Tochkin and Emerson Etem both scored twice as the Medicine Hat Tigers defeated the Brandon Wheat Kings 7-5 on Monday night to advance to the next round of the Western Hockey League playoffs.

Wacey Hamilton, Cole Grbavac and Reid Petryk also scored for the Tigers, who won the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarter-final 4-2, setting up a second-round series with the Red Deer Rebels. Linden Vey had three assists for Medicine Hat.

Mike Ferland replied with three goals for the Wheat Kings, who played their home games at Winnipeg's MTS Centre with their own arena unavailable due to the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair. Tyrel Seaman and Paul Ciarelli also scored for Brandon.

Deven Dubyk stopped 33 shots for Medicine Hat, while Brandon netminder Corbin Boes made 19 saves.
