University goalie recovering after throat cut by skate
A university goaltender is in fair condition in a Windsor, Ont., hospital after his throat was accidentally slashed during a game.
Kurt Jory, of Brandon, Man., was hurt Saturday while playing for the Brock University Badgers from St. Catharines, Ont., against the Windsor Lancers.
The 21-year-old netminder suffered a severed vein in his neck when he was clipped by a skate during a goalmouth scramble in the third period.
The Badgers say Jory is in full recovery after undergoing surgery and will return to St. Catharines later this week.
The Canadian Hockey League requires players to wear neck guards, but Canadian Interuniversity Sport does not have a similar requirement.
Chief executive officer Marg McGregor said the CIS board of directors was briefed on the incident Monday.
She added that a CIS sport committee will look at the current equipment requirements and make a recommendation if it feels a change is necessary.
"If it's a change that would help protect student-athletes, then that's something that needs to be looked at very seriously," she said.
