Toronto Aeros win NWHL title
Two weeks after winning the Esso Nationals, the Toronto Aeros added another trophy to their collection.
Sommer West scored at 3:49 of overtime to give the Aeros a thrilling 5-4 victory over the Montreal Axion and the right to hoist the Championship Cup of the National Women's Hockey League.
West's overtime marker capped a four-goal night for the Aeros forward. Haley Irwin scored Toronto's other goal, while Sami Jo Small supplied almost-perfect relief as the Aeros rallied from an early 3-0 deficit.
Catherine Bertrand, with two goals, Annie Desrosiers and Gina Kingsbury scored for the Axion.
Bertrand tied the game at 4-4 with less than 10 minutes remaining. Both teams had scoring chances in the final minute of regulation, but neither side could put it in.
In overtime, Jenn Botterill set up the game-winning goal when she fired a pass out of the corner to West, who was waiting on the top of the crease.
West deflected it in for the most memorable goal of her career.
Toronto outshot Montreal 43-26.
Montreal was trying to become the first team from Quebec to win an NWHL title.
