Sharks defenceman Blake retires
San Jose Sharks captain Rob Blake has retired after a 20-year career as one of the league's top defencemen.
Blake announced his decision at a news conference Friday.
Blake, 40, won a Stanley Cup with Colorado in 2001, the Norris Trophy as the league's top defenceman for Los Angeles in 1998, and an Olympic gold medal for Canada in 2002.
Blake is 10th on the career list with 240 goals as a defenceman. He finished his career with 537 assists and 777 points. His 136 power-play goals are the third-most by an NHL defenceman, trailing only Hall of Famers Ray Bourque with 173 and Al MacInnis with 166.
