The deal is worth a total of $5.25 million US. Vermette made $1.075 million with the Senators during the 2006-07 campaign.

In 81 games with the Senators last season, the native of St. Agapit, Que., hit career-highs in goals (24) and assists (29) with 51 penalty minutes.

Vermette, 26, also added three game-winning goals and tied for second on the team in short-handed goals with three.

His first career hat-trick also came last season, with three goals in an 8-2 blowout of the Toronto Maple Leafs on Apr. 3.

The centre also showed a deft touch in the faceoff circle, finishing sixth in the league in that category with a 56.7 per cent success rate.

In 297 career NHL regular-season games, the second-round pick from the 2000 NHL draft has scored 71 goals and added 68 assists with 163 penalty minutes.

Vermette has also added four goals and four assists with 18 minutes in 38 career playoff games.
