Canadiens, Paul Byron strike 3-year deal
Winger has 8 goals, 11 points in 40 games this season
The Montreal Canadiens agreed to a three-year contract with speedy winger Paul Byron on Tuesday.
Byron, who was eligible to be an unrestricted free agent on July 1, reportedly will earn $3.5 million US over three years for a $1.67 million average per season.
The Canadiens claimed Byron off waivers from the Calgary Flames on Oct. 6. In 40 games in Montreal, the Ottawa native has eight goals and three assists while averaging 13 minutes 11 seconds of ice time per game.
The five-foot-eight 158-pound winger is tied for second in the NHL in short-handed points with five, including three goals.
"A fast-skating and versatile forward, Paul has been an important addition to our team," Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin said in a release. "He can contribute on the offensive side while being responsible defensively.
"Furthermore, he demonstrates an exemplary attitude and the qualities of a true professional."
