Chris Higgins will not be in the Vancouver Canucks' lineup for the Oct. 7 season opener at Calgary after breaking his right foot on Monday night.

The 32-year-old left-winger will be re-evaluated in three weeks after he took a Brenden Dillon slapshot off the inside of the ankle in the second period a 1-0 NHL pre-season win over San Jose.

A 10-year NHL veteran, Higgins scored 12 goals and 36 points with a plus-8 rating last season.

His injury means rookie Jake Virtanen will probably receive a longer look in training camp.

Selected sixth overall in the 2014 NHL draft, Virtanen was scheduled to skate on a line with rookie centre Cole Cassels and veteran Alex Burrows in Tuesday's game against the visiting Sharks.
