Don Cherry wants Team Canada to "smarten up" after defenceman Aaron Ekblad was concussed from a hit during an exhibition game earlier this week.

The Coach's Corner commentator voiced his displeasure via Twitter (@CoachsCornerCBC) with the Canadian world junior hockey squad for playing this year's No. 1 overall pick against the Czech Republic in what Cherry called a "meaningless" game Monday.

Ekblad, the highly touted 18-year-old defenceman, is expected to be ready for Florida Panthers training camp in September, but Cherry believes the junior exhibition slate should be reserved for those who aren't necessarily locks to make the team at the world juniors in December.

Cherry said he didn't think the injury risk for star players was worth it.
